Funchal Airport – Santa Cruz (FNC), also known as Madeira Airport is approx. 15 km east / northeast of Funchal center.The airport was once infamous for its short runway, but in 2000 it was expanded – and now has normal length. Funchal / Madeira Airport serves more than 2 million passengers annually.
The airport was opened in 1964, and has regular flights to numerous destinations throughout Europe – in addition to a substantial charter.
There is a bus every hour from the airport to the center of Funchal – and the smaller towns Machico and Funchal. There are also buses to other parts of Madeira. Alternatively you can use the taxi. Many also want to rent a car in Madeira, and several international rental agencies are represented at the airport, including Avis, Hertz, Drive, Europcar and Rodavante.
The airport has a usable number of restaurants, bars and shops. In the departure hall there is also a separate duty-free store and a shop selling local products (including Madeira wines).
It no hotels at the airport, but in the modern district that is built just west of the center of Funchal, the sample is very good.
