Kajaani (Kajaani) is a city and municipality in Finland.It is located on the south side of the lake Ule träsk and is the main town in the county of Kainuu, located in Finland far east of the country. The town has 37,941 inhabitants (2012).
Kajaani is a university town and the major industries are sawmills, lumber and paper industries. Paper mill UPM Kymmene was the largest private employer in Kajaani from its creation in 1907. When it was closed in 2008 due to lack of profitability and high energy costs, it felt like an era in the city’s history was over.
Kajaani Art Museum has a large collection of Finnish contemporary art. Kajaani theatre was established in 1969, is one of the most respected theaters in Finland and pulls both good actors, directors and audiences from all over Finland. The most notable annual cultural events is poetry week and jazz festival.
One point that is worth checking out is the ruins of the castle built Kajaneborg 1604-19 and destroyed by the Russians in 1716.
