Kosice in the east of Slovakia by the river Hornad – only 25 km from the border with Hungary.The city is the country’s second largest city after Bratislava, and has 234,000 inhabitants (2011).
Kosice is the economic and cultural center of eastern Slovakia, and universities, museums, galleries and theaters.Kosice is also an important industrial city of the region. In 2013, the city the title of “European Capital of Culture” with Marseille in France.
Kosice has a continental climate with hot summers and cold, snowy winters.
Old Town of Kosice is a major tourist attraction with its well-preserved historic buildings. Here is example one of Slovakia’s most beautiful and largest cathedrals – St. Elisabeth Cathedral – which was built in the period 1378 to 1508. Also St. Michael’s chapel from the 1300s is worth a visit. The chapel is the second oldest building.
Art-lovers should visit the East Slovak Gallery – which was founded in 1951. This is Slovakia’s first art gallery, and has more than 6,000 works of art – created by regional artists in the period 1400-1900’s.
The main street of Kosice called “Hlavna ulica” and is a pedestrian street with many nice shops, cafes and restaurants.
Other attractions in the city include The East Slovak Museum, Technical Museum with Planetarium, a botanical garden and a zoo – which is located northwest of the city (district Kavečany).
The city’s airport – Kosice International Airport – located 6 miles south of downtown.
