The port city of La Coruña is located in northwest Spain on the Atlantic Ocean, and is the capital of the province of the same name.The city is located in the region of Galicia, and has approximately 246,000 inhabitants (2011).

La Coruña is one of the most important ports in northern Spain – and has great export of agricultural products and the country’s second largest fishing.

The old town is on a peninsula, and here are a number of historical sites – including churches “Santiago” and “Santa Maria del Campo” – both of which are from the 1200s.

Other important tourist attractions in La Coruna is San Antonio Castle from 1590 – which houses an archaeological and historical museum, and “Torre de Hércules” – the oldest lighthouse still in operation, and originates from Roman times.This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The waterfront in La Coruña is also an attraction (one of the longest in Europe) and the Art Museum “Museo de Bellas Artes” one can see sketches of Rubens and a number of religious paintings.

Otherwise, the city has an opera house, several theaters, a Picasso museum, a military museum, science museum with a planetarium, aquarium, botanical garden and museum “House of Man” – with interactive exhibits that focus on the human body.
