Leipzig is located in a lowland area by the river Weisse Elster, which later flows into the Saale in Halle. The highest point is Monarchenhügel, which measures 159 m

The city is perhaps best known for its large trade fairs, but is also a university town. Leipzig University was founded in 1415 and is one of the oldest in Europe.

Some of the most popular tourist attractions in Leipzig include The old town hall from 1557, the new town hall in 1899 – with its 114 meter high round tower, Nikolai Church from 1165 and Thomas Church from 1496 – where composer Johan Sebastian Bach was cantor in the period from 1723 to 1750. Front of the church stands a monument of Bach, and nearby is Bach Museum.

The 91 meter high memorial “Völkerschlachtdenkmal” is also one of the city’s popular attractions. The monument was erected to commemorate the Battle of Leipzig in 1813.

The city has otherwise zoological – and Botanical Gardens, Ethnographic Museum, Pharmacy Museum, Sports Museum and the Museum of Art – an exhibition of paintings, graphics and sculptures.
