Kuala Lumpur is the capital of Malaysia, is located west of the country – about 40 km from the coast.It is also the center of a separate federal territory within the state of Selangor limits. The population is of about 1.8 million, and the city has a strong position as Malaysia’s main commercial, cultural and educational center.
Kuala Lumpur was founded as a mining town by the Chinese in 1857 and developed rapidly with more and more features. In recent years, the expansion in the direction of a modern metropolis has been formidable.
Today Kuala Lumpur is clearly marked by Malaysia’s rapid and strong economic growth and modern architecture with high-rises and office buildings characterize large parts of the urban landscape. Yet the city has also a number of more traditional architecture to show off, both Chinese and Islamic inspired. The development has led to have formed multiple centers. Most sights are to be found in the traditional center, located at the confluence of Kelang and Gombak meet.
Among the natural visits objectives Merdeka (“Freedom Square”), which Malaya-Federation was proclaimed in 1957. Also Town China Town, with its unmistakable Chinese character, must be mentioned. Other traditional attractions is the National Assembly, National Monument, National Mosque and several interesting museums. Families with children will also often add back road activity park Taman Tasek Perdana.
When it comes to modern architecture, there are several prominent skyscrapers, which contributes greatly to form Kuala Lumpur’s “skyline”. It applies primarily to Malaysia Telecom building (310 meters), Plaza Rakyat (382 meters) and the 450 m high tvillingskyskraperen “Petronas Twin Towers”. A spectacular footbridge connects 41 and 42 floor of the two “towers” – and from that it is 170 meters down to the street level.
The city is otherwise a clear multicultural character, where one can see the minarets, spiers, Chinese pagodas and Indian temples side by side.
The nearest airport is Kuala Lumpur International Airport, which is approx. 50 km southwest of the city.
