Pietermaritzburg – often just called Maritzburg – is the capital and the second largest city in the province of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. It has – with suburbs – just under 500,000 inhabitants (2010).

University of KwaZulu-Natal is located in Pietermaritzburg, and the industry is dominated by aluminum production and the manufacture of dairy products.

Pietermaritzburg was founded in 1838 – and was briefly the capital of the independent Boer republic Natalia. Britain acquired the area in 1843, and did Pietermaritzburg to the administrative center of the colony of Natal. In 1910, when South African Union was formed, the city continued as the provincial capital of Natal.

Among the main tourist attractions in Pietermaritzburg, we find The Natal Museum, Tatham Art Gallery, City Hall and the Sanbi Botanical Gardens. The city is otherwise a separate play casino – Golden Horse Casino.

In the vicinity there are several parks and landscape interest. The most popular visitor destination in the Albert Falls Nature Reserve, Howick Falls, Midmar Public Nature Reserve and Queen Elizabeth Park.

The nearest airport is Pietermaritzburg-Oribi Airport, located 4 miles south of downtown.
