The Italian town of Sorrento in the south of the country, specifically in the province of Naples. The city belongs to the region of Campania, and is beautifully situated on the cliffs – approx. 50 meters above the sea – on the south side of the Gulf of Naples.

Sorrento has about 17,000 inhabitants (2011), but in summer the population is increasing significantly, when tourists flock to the city. The beaches and the historic atmosphere of the city, make Sorrento a sought after holiday destination in summer – preferably of charter tourists from northern European countries and cruise ship tourists.

Many great artists and writers of the 1700s and 1800s have visited Sorrento and poet Henrik Ibsen lived and worked in periods – including the guesthouse “La Rosa Magra” and the hotel “Hotel Tramontiano”. At both locations there is today a monument / memorial plaque in honor of Henrik Ibsen, and in 2007 opened a Ibsen Park in the city.

Popular attractions in Sorrento include Old city with cathedral – originally from 1000’s, which was later rebuilt in the 1400s and several museums – including an archaeological museum.

At the city’s central square “Piazza Tasso” is the bronze sculpture of the Renaissance poet Tosso in full view.

The nearest major airport is Naples International Airport, located 55 km northwest of Sorrento.
