Visby is the only town on the island of Gotland situated in the Baltic Sea. The town has 22,593 inhabitants (2010). It is called “the city of roses and ruins” and is one of Sweden’s top tourist destinations.
Visby is arguably the best-preserved medieval city in Scandinavia and the old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 3.4 km long bund wall surrounding Visby is one of Europe’s best preserved city walls. It was built in the period 1250-1288, of the original 29 towers are 27 preserved. Even older than the curtain wall is the Powder Tower at the port (1100).
