Vordingborg farthest south on the island of Zealand by Masnedsund and has 11,600 inhabitants (2011). From the city, it is a bridge to the island Masnedø and across the Great Power Bridge to the island of Falster.
In Vordingborg center are the pleasant shopping streets with shops, a rich music and culture, and cozy cafes and restaurants.
The city’s biggest tourist attraction is the ruins of the old royal castle “Vordingborg Slot” – which was built by Valdemar the Great in the 1300s. The castle was destroyed in 1671, but the 26-meter high “Gåsetårnet” from 1369 is still in place. In the area Denmark s Borg Center – where visitors can see exhibits and 3D movie about the royal castle.
On site is also Our Lady Church (Vordingborg Church) from 1460 and a historic botanical garden.
In summer there are good swimming conditions in Vordingborg, and the mile-long beach “Ore Strand” is very popular with both locals and tourists.
Vordingborg organizes a popular city and music festival “Vordingborg Festuge” every summer, with more than 100,000 visitors during the six festival days.
The nearest airport is Copenhagen Airport – Kastrup, located 100 km northeast of Vordingborg.
