Elvas is a municipality located in the eastern part of Portugal, namely approximately 200 km east of the capital, Lisbon – near the border with Spain.The whole municipality has about 23,000 residents – where 18,000 of them live in the city.
Besides tourism, the trade in agricultural products (especially olives and plums), and some textile industry, which dominates the city’s business community.
Elvas is best known for having been one of Portugal’s strongest fortress towns, and many of the attractions in the city are linked to this. Elvas’ most famous landmark is the impressive Moorish castle – Castelo de Elvas – from the 1200s. It is built over a Roman fortress from ancient times and has the status of Portuguese national monument. Also Santa Luzia forts from the 1600s to be mentioned.
The fortifications of Elvas has been on UNESCO’s World Heritage List since 2009.
Other attractions Elvas is an aqueduct from the 1500s and the city’s large cathedral in the late Gothic style – Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assuncão de Elvas – also from the 1500s.
The nearest airport is Badajoz Airport, located 37 km east of Elvas.
