Fish Hoek (Vissers Bay) is a small coastal town at the eastern end of the Fish Hoek Valley in False Bay – 30 km from Cape Town, Fish Hoek that today is officially a neighborhood in.The population is around 16,000 (2010). The traditional livelihoods in Fish Hoek is – as the name implies – related to fishing, but eventually it is tourism that has become dominant. The city attracts tourists particularly interested in surfing, sailing and kayaking – but also among “regular” swimmers are Fish Hoek popular.
Dutch settlers (Boers) arrived in town in 1652 and forced the original locals away. Still, the city has a Dutch touch.
Until a few years ago it was not possible to buy alcohol in Fish Hoek. Still, it is impossible to buy alcohol in shops, but as a result, investment in tourism, now serves alcohol in the city’s bars and restaurants.
The beach in Fish Hoek is about. 1.5 km long and is located in the bay (False Bay) protects against the strong currents off. However, there are limits on how far from shore you can swim, and a large number of bodyguards fit that bathers remain within the safe zone.
