Ioannina is located northwest of Greece, and is the largest town in the historical region of Epirus.Ioannina has approximately 111,000 inhabitants (2011), and is 500 meters above sea level – on the western shore of Lake Pamvotis.
The city is located 450 km northwest of Athens. Ioanninna – as the locals often called “Jannena” or “Jannina” – is known for its production of feta cheese and its spring water Zagori.The city also has its own university, with about 20,000 students.
Ioannina has a Mediterranean climate with hot dry summers and mild, wet winters. Winters are a bit colder here than on the coast.
The city’s biggest tourist attraction is the island “Nisi” – located in Lake Pamvotis. There are several passenger boats out to the island, and the journey takes 15 minutes. On the island there are several monasteries, churches, cafes and gift shops, and the main attractions include Monastery of Agios Panteleimon medieval – which is now a popular museum you will Exhibition of paintings.
Other attractions in the town is an archaeological museum, the Byzantine Museum and the castle in the center of the Middle Ages.
Ioannina has also many Orthodox churches, three mosques and one synagogue. Mosque “Fethiye” from 1795 which dates back to the 1400s.
The nearest airport is Ioannina National Airport, located 4 miles northwest of downtown. From here there are direct flights to both Athens and Thessaloniki.
