Soweto is a district on the outskirts of South Africa’s largest city, Johannesburg. In this district there live today ca. 1.8 million inhabitants (2010). Soweto is still a predominantly black neighbourhood, and many of its citizens are among Johannesburg’s poorest.

Soweto became a symbol of the African struggle against apartheid system in the 1970s, and the two Nobel Peace Prize winners Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu both have their origin here.

Soweto is also known for housing the world’s third largest hospitals – Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, named for the black freedom hero Chris Hani, who was killed in an assassination attempt in 1993.

Soweto’s most famous attraction is Mandela House, where you can get information about Nelson Mandela’s life and his impact on modern South African history. A main goal is also to promote human rights, democracy, reconciliation, mutual respect and tolerance among the various ethnic groups in the country.

Nelson Mandela and his family lived here from 1946 to 1997. When Mandela donated the house to the Soweto Heritage Trust – and in 1999 Mandela House declared a national historic monument.

The nearest airport is Johannesburg International Airport, located 57 km northeast of Soweto.
