Tórshavn (Danish: Thorshavn) is the capital of the Faroe Islands. It is located on the southeast coast of the main island Streymoy. The town has 12,400 inhabitants, while the Tórshavn municipality has a population of about 20,000 (2010). The city is Faroese administrative, commercial and cultural center, and also has an important port. From Tórshavn is the ferry to most islands in the area and to Denmark and Iceland.

The city’s main source of income is fishing and tourism. Many visit the Faroe Islands and Torshavn primarily because of the unspoiled nature with breathtaking scenery, cliffs, green hills and plains. Other tourist attractions include Tórshavn the Cathedral in 1788, the Art Museum “Lista Longing Føroya”, the modern church “Vesturkirkjan” – inaugurated in 1975, the city park “Vidarlundin” – with its many sculptures and the national museum “Føroya Forn Minnie Longing”.

Faroe has only one airport – Vágar Airport – which has flights to Norway, Denmark and Iceland. The airport is on the island Vágar – approx. 40 min. drive from Tórshavn. It is a tunneling connection between the islands Vágar and Streymoy.
