Chalkidiki (who also goes by the names of Chalkidiki and / or Halkidiki) is both a region and a peninsula in northern Greece, specifically in the southeastern portion of Central Macedonia.Chalkidiki has coastline on the north western part of the Aegean Sea. The region has about 105,000 residents – of whom 11,000 live in the main town Polygyros – which is located in the prefecture.
The region is famous for the town of Stagira, located on the east coast, and was the birthplace of Aristotle oldtidsfilosofen.
Chalkidiki is also known to be a popular tourist destination in the summer, especially in the south region. Here are the 3 peninsulas Kassandra, Sithonia and Agion Oros (Mount Athos with measuring 2033 m). Agion Oros is a “monastic republic” (self-government), which is subject to an order of monks and protected by Greece.
Kassandrahalvøya is perhaps the most popular for tourists. There are many popular beach and resort towns with tourist hotels and inviting sandy beaches.
