The coastal town of Split is located in southwestern Croatia, on the Adriatic Sea, and has 211,000 inhabitants (2011).The city is located in the province of Dalmatia, and is a famous tourist and port.

Split is the economic and administrative center for the region, and is also a major transportation hub. From the port of Split ferries to such  Dubrovnik, Rijeka, Pescara and Anacona.

The city was founded in 200’s, and is now known to be Croatia’s cultural center. There are many historical and cultural sights in Split, and the old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The old town Diocletian’s Palace, which is a major tourist attraction. The palace was built by the Emperor Diocletian in the early 300’s, and is one of the most preserved Roman buildings in the world. The palace measures 215 x 181 meters.

Also the Roman Catholic Split Cathedral is worth a visit. The cathedral’s oldest parts of which date from the 300s, while the rest of the building is from the 1100s. It is possible for the public to get up the cathedral tower, and from here you have great views over the city.

Other popular tourist attractions in Split’s beaches, the city museum, a maritime museum, a zoo and two archaeological museums.

The city’s airport – Split Airport – located 24 miles west of downtown.
